A Semi-Permanent Transformation

Make-up can be an amazing tool in transforming us from blah to beautiful.  It can help us hide blemishes, fix imperfections, and enhance our natural look.  But we all know know that our morning beauty routines can be time consuming and expensive and constantly touching-up through the day or during a date night is a drag.  Semi-Permanent make-up can be a great solution for a long lasting flawless make-up look.  Not only does it save time, but it the long run it can save money by eliminating the need to purchase eyeliners, lip liners, lipsticks, brow liners and fillers, brushes and more.

First lets start with a few basic questions you might be asking yourself about semi-permanent make-up.

What Exactly Is Semi-Permanent Make-up?

Semi-Permanent make-up is essentially a tattoo.  Natural, non-toxic dyes are applied through the use of small needles just like a tattoo.  The pigment is injected into the skin for a lasting make up look.

What Kind of Semi-Permanent Make-up Can I Have Applied?

The most common semi-permanent make-up applications are eyebrows, eyeliner, and lipstick.  As the application process does involve tattooing, these areas of the face allow for a more natural finished look than say, trying to tattoo on blush or eye-shadows.

Does it Hurt?

Most people say that it’s not actually painful but can be a bit uncomfortable.  A numbing cream (topical anaesthetic) is applied to numb the skin in the area that is being tattooed to reduce any pain.

Choosing Your Look

It can be scary to decide to semi-permanently have make-up applied to your face.  After all, what happens if you don’t like the colour, style, or shape of the make-up tattoo?  This is where skilled industry professionals come in.  They will help you choose the colour that suits your skin tone and the shape that fits your face.  This applies to eyebrows, eyeliner, and lips.  They often use regular make-up to outline or fill in your brows, lips, and liner to show you what it will look like when complete.  You can make adjustments and tweak your style before the tattooing process begins.  You can choose a dramatic or natural look, it’s all about what you are looking to achieve.

For eyebrows, most often a microblading technique is used, which is short tattooed lines that mimic the look of actual eyebrow hairs.  You can go with a natural look that just fills in sparse areas or corrects years of overtweezing or you can go for a thick full brow that mimics the look of having applied liner and filler to the brow for a made-up finish.

For eyeliner, some people just want a darker area tattooed directly over the lash line to give the eyes a more awake look and to give the illusion of longer thicker lashes.  Others want it to look like they have applied their eyeliner for a night out with a full thick eyeliner line or even a permanent cat eye look.

For lips, a natural shade that matches the tone of the lips can be applied to give the lips a fuller more youthful look.  However, some people prefer to actually have a colour applied to eliminate the need for lipstick.

The End Result

The end result usually looks like flawlessly applied make-up without the fading, smudging, and reapplication needed with regular makeup.  Most semi-permanent make-up applications last anywhere from about 1-3 years before needing a touch up. If you are looking to save time and money, while achieving a beautiful finished face, semi-permanent make-up may be the right choice for you.
